5 Terrific Fall Day Trips
We love fall here at Newport, what with all the pumpkin-flavored goodies, changing leaves, and start of chilly sweater weather. Whether you’re looking to enjoy a cozy upstate town or spend the day apple picking, now is the perfect time to venture just outside of Jersey City. We’ve gathered up some of the best day trips just outside of Newport for an escape to fall fun. Read ahead to learn more!
Blogger Blond Wayfarer has this guide to her fifteen favorite fall day trips, and top of the list is the idyllic upstate town of Sleepy Hollow. Nestled in the Hudson Valley, Sleepy Hollow is the birthplace of author Washington Irving--you can even visit the cemetery where he’s buried while you’re there! Be sure to check out the Great Jack O’Lantern Blaze in nearby Croton-on-Hudson, which features roughly 7,000 hand-carved versions of the spooky pumpkins.
Ringwood State Park
Ringwood State Park has an abundance of activities for the whole family to enjoy. Blogger ChicPeaJC recommends taking a hike on one of the area’s many nature trails to appreciate the stunning fall foliage. Spread out and enjoy a picnic with gorgeous scenic views or check out the New Jersey State Botanical Garden, located in the park.
Storm King Arts Center
Storm King Arts Center offers 500-acres of outdoor art viewing in beautiful Hudson Valley. This stunning upstate New York environment is the perfect setting for taking in their large-scale sculptures and site-specific art commissions. Timed-ticket entry is required and must be purchased in advance. Find more info here.
Apple Picking at Demarest Farms
Located in nearby Bergen county, Demarest Farms is only about a 30-minute drive from downtown Jersey City. Pick your own apples (and pumpkins) here and don’t forget to grab a hayride and an apple cider donut from their concession stand. Make sure to book a reservation for your visit beforehand here.
Pumpkin Picking at A. Casola Farms
Pick your own pumpkins right off the vine at A. Casola Farms, just about an hour drive from Newport. There’s fun for the whole family here with hayrides, corn mazes, and even a children’s petting zoo. Check out the full list of this season’s available fall activities here.
