Doing Good, Feeling Good in 2021

Jan 4, 2021

2021 is already off to a great start at Newport, with members of our community finding so many ways to meet new year’s goals right here at home! Fortunately, to keep the “New Year, New Me” momentum going, there are tons of additional opportunities for ensuring continued wellbeing in our day-to-day lives. Whether it’s through volunteering to help local organizations or creating new personal habits to inspire your best year yet, read ahead for our tips for doing good and feeling good well into 2021!

Become a Volunteer

Looking for opportunities to give back to our community? Become a volunteer emergency responder in Jersey City! The Community Emergency Response Team seeks ongoing support for their volunteer-based organization geared towards providing assistance in the event of an emergency. Volunteers receive hands-on and virtual training in first aid, fire extinguisher-use, disaster preparedness, and search & rescue techniques. Find more information on how to become a volunteer responder here.

Donate to Our Community

Short on time but still want to find a way to contribute? There are many organizations in Jersey City seeking donation based assistance. AngelaCARES Inc. is a nonprofit providing education and support materials for older adults and their caregivers--donations help sustain these vital resources for older members of our community. Or consider donating to Hope House, which provides emergency shelter for women and children without housing. Shop Local to Support New Hobbies

Pledging to read more in 2021? Consider purchasing books from small locally-owned businesses to help support our city’s economy! Word Bookstores is a great independent option to check out right here in Jersey City. Word also hosts a ton of virtual book clubs, ranging in a wide variety of interests from Sci-Fi to the Gilmore Girls, all of which are excellent for getting excited about reading throughout the new year. Inspire Personal Productivity

If you’re working from home more, learning to manage time efficiently outside of the normal work day setting can be challenging. The good news is, there are so many great tools to help with productivity in 2021! Using a time tracking app like Harvest is great for staying on target, particularly when hours worked are directly connected to income. Find more info and check out a free 30-day trial of the app here. Prefer a slightly more old-fashioned approach? A good ‘ole pen and paper is all you need for a tried and true productivity technique like the Bullet Journal Method. The Bullet Journal method will help with staying organized and efficient, and they even have an app to pair with the journal if the digital approach is more your speed.

Get Organized at Home

The start of a new year is the ideal time to refresh our spaces and get organized at home. While this may seem like an overwhelming task, it’s made much easier by focusing on one area of the home at a time. Targeting something specific, like decluttering piles of excess paperwork, can be a great way to get started. Uncluttered Simplicity offers 4 easy steps for getting paperwork in order. Start by gathering all paperwork together and dividing into piles of “keep,” “toss,” or “shred.” Finish up by creating a filing system for the remaining documents. Find more tips for getting organized at home here.
