Free Events & Activities Near Newport

Apr 29, 2021

The weather has been gorgeous lately, making it the ideal time to get out and enjoy everything Jersey City has to offer! One of the best things about Newport’s location is that, even while we are surrounded by world-class restaurants, shopping, and cultural institutions, there are also plenty of ways to enjoy Jersey City on the cheap! With so many activities and events happening this spring, we thought we’d round up the top 5 free things to do in Jersey City right now.

Artist & Maker Market

This Saturday, May 1st marks the reopening of HDSID’s annual Artist & Maker Market at Grove Street PATH Plaza. The open-air bazaar will be open 12:00-6:00pm every upcoming Saturday through September, as well as weekly on Wednesdays and Fridays from 3:00-9:00pm. Find locally handcrafted goods and fine art, made by area artists and makers. For more information, check here.

Summer/Autumn Farmers Market

Also hosted by HDSID, the Summer/Autumn Farmers Market reopens this week at Grove Street PATH Plaza. The Farmers Market will be open every Monday and Thursday from 4:00-8:00pm through December. Check out amazing local vendors like @hobokenfarms--purveyors of delicious mozzarella, bread, pasta, and sauces--and JC Fish Stand, a great spot for fresh, local seafood. Still in need of a vaccine? The Farmers Market also features a mobile covid vaccination unit, offering free (Moderna) vaccines to the community and a free cookie from @bangcookies for every vaccination! Find more info here.

Fun Under The Sun

This kid-friendly event on May 22nd will feature a puppet show, arts & crafts, magic, and special music for children! Hosted by JC Families, all activities will take place in City Hall Plaza from 11:00am-2:00pm. To learn more about what is sure to be a great time for the whole family, visit the event page here.

Visit Governors Island

Historic Governors Island reopens to the public this Saturday, May 1st. A short ferry ride from Lower Manhattan (free for children, $3 for adults), the island offers the perfect springtime day-trip escape. There’s tons to check out once you’re there, from public art exhibitions to historic walking tours to learning about the environment through GrowNYC’s Urban Farm and Teaching Garden. To learn more about Governors Island and to plan your visit, check their website.

Check out a Local Art Gallery

Throughout the month of May, Smush Gallery in Jersey City will host a series of free and “pay what you can” in-person and virtual events, ranging from art exhibitions to choreographic workshops to anti-racist discussion groups. Or check out Guttenberg Arts Gallery, which is free and open to the public by scheduled appointment. This weekend is the last to see the work of their Winter Artists in Residence: Jared Deery, Pablo Garcia Lopez and Linda Mead.
