How to Have the Best JC Staycation

Jan 11, 2021

As we head deeper into winter, many of us might normally be seeking a bit of a getaway right about now. Though making safe travel plans remains difficult with the challenges posed by the coronavirus, there’s still plenty of ways to plan a mini-escape right here in Jersey City. This week we’re sharing our guide to having the best staycation imaginable--no planes required! Read ahead for our tips for enjoying all our city has to offer!

Visit an Art Museum

It’s easy to forget about our access to world class museums when caught up in the hustle and bustle of day-to-day life. A staycation is a good time to carve out a visit to one of these gems, like the MoRA museum right here in Jersey City. The MoRA, or Museum of Russian Art, brings a stunning collection of late-Soviet era art to our area. Call ahead or visit MoRA’s website for their latest hours. Or, head into nearby NYC for a trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Entry to the Met is timed to comply with covid safety regulations and space museum guests out, so you’ll want to plan your visit beforehand here. Timed tickets are also required for this year’s costume exhibition, About Time: Fashion and Duration, which traces a century and a half of fashion in celebration of the Met’s 150th anniversary.

Catch a Movie

Missing the chance to get out and take a trip to the movie theater? Head to dullboy bar in downtown JC for their outdoor movie night on Sunday evenings. Enjoy dinner, a speciality cocktail, and a flick on their heated outdoor patio. There are two showings of the week’s film, so there’s plenty of opportunity to feel spread out and covid-safe while viewing. For more info on the movie of the week, check dullboy’s Instagram.

Enjoy Dining Out

Jersey City is home to an abundance of excellent outdoor dining options--JC Upfront has a comprehensive, and frequently updated, guide to our city’s outdoor dining options here. A standout among the crowd, restaurant Lokal offers an elevated dining experience right here at home. Located along the Jersey City waterfront, guests can take in the stunning backdrop of the NYC skyline while dining on delicious modern American cuisine. Be sure to check out their Instagram for more info and to make reservations.

Take a Gallery Trip

To see what’s on the cutting edge of contemporary art, plan a trip to one of Jersey City’s excellent galleries. With branches in Miami and Chicago as well, Mana Contemporary in JC hosts a wide variety of long-term and special exhibitions. They are currently offering themed, small group tours to comply with covid safety regulations--book your spot in advance here. Or check out The Gigantic Miniature Show at Deep Space Gallery and support local artists.

Be a Tourist for the Day

One of the best things about a staycation is the opportunity to be a tourist in your own city for the day. With so few travelers visiting at the moment, it’s an especially opportune time to check out a classic site like Liberty State Park. Take in breathtaking views of the iconic Statue of Liberty without all of the usual crowds. And be sure to visit the Central Railroad Terminal of Jersey City while you’re there.

We hope you get to experience some of these amazing spots right here at home! Tag us at #YourNewport to show us how your staycation is going!
