The Best Spring Day Trips From Newport

Mar 31, 2021

With so much time spent cooped up at home this year, spring brings an exciting opportunity to start (safely) getting out and exploring again! While there’s tons to do right here around Newport, escaping Jersey City for the day can be an excellent way to recharge. Whether seeking nature-filled adventures, beachside fun, a fantastic dining experience, or a new city to uncover, these spots have something for everyone. Read ahead to learn more about these 5 easy spring day trips from JC!

Asbury Park, NJ

When you’re looking for an easy escape to the beach, the small seaside city of Asbury Park is only an hour drive from Jersey City. Start by strolling the boardwalk, filled with tons of food options, fun shops, and live entertainment. Be sure to snap a pic with one of the cool painted murals along the way. Then stake out a beach spot for catching some rays and taking an ocean swim. Afterwards, check out the festive German beer hall atmosphere at Asbury Festhalle and Biergarten or enjoy free pizza and lively fun at Irish pub Johnny Mac’s.

Cape May, NJ

Just about 2.5 hours from JC, the quaint, serene beauty of Cape May offers the ideal Jersey Shore mini-retreat. Touted as “America’s Original Seaside Resort,” Cape May boasts pristine beaches and a town full of history and rich architectural design. Take a walk along the nearly 2 mile long promenade that borders the beach to take in some of the sights. Check out the iconic Cape May Lighthouse, then finish the day with a glass of wine at Cape May Winery & Vineyard or Willow Creek Winery.

Morristown, NJ

Considered the military capital of the American Revolution, a trip to Morristown is a special treat for US history buffs. About 45 minutes from JC, head to the Morristown National Historical Park first to visit the site where Washington and the Continental army survived one of the coldest winters on record. Morristown is also full of places to appreciate the beauty of NJ nature--try scoping out the trails at either the Frelinghuysen Arboretum or Loantaka Brook Reservation. Afterwards, a visit to any of Morristown’s wonderful restaurants is a must-do. For a casual sports bar head to The Famished Frog or check out the contemporary comfort food at The Committed Pig.

Red Bank, NJ

A quick one-hour drive from Hudson Country, escape to the charming town of Red Bank on the Navesink River. Stroll through Riverside Gardens Park for pretty views of the river and live music and events during the warmer months. Grab some food at one of the top-notch local eateries, like The Molly Pitcher Inn or Catch 19. Round out the day with an adult beverage at local brewery Red Tank Brewing Company or popular Italian spot Birravino.

Atlantic City, NJ

Only two hours from home, find yourself immersed in the enthralling casino dappled beaches of Atlantic City. Start with a stroll on the iconic boardwalk to see all the quirky souvenir shops while enjoying some obligatory saltwater taffy. The beach itself is terrific for sunbathing and taking a dip in the Atlantic, too. When you’ve had enough fun in the sun, head to the casinos to try your luck at the slots or the roulette table. Not feeling super lucky? The Borgata Casino is also home to a ton of great restaurants and bars with live entertainment!
